Church of the Annunciation

What a dangerous billboard.

The Muslims love to post signs, loud speakers, and any possible obstruction next to a Christian or Jewish site in Israel.  

The building in the background is the Church of the Annunciation, or sometimes known as the Basilica of the Annunciation, in Nazareth.  This church was established at the site where, according to Roman Catholic tradition, the Annunciation took place- the announcement by the angel Gabriel to Mary that she would conceive a child who would be called the Son of God.  This church was constructed in 1969 over the site of a Byzantine church and later, a Crusade church.

I loved this mosaic tile on a section of the ceiling in the Church.

This lower level contains the Grotto of the Annunciation, believed to be the remains of the original childhood home of Mary. 

We walked a short distance from the Church of the Annunciation to a sweet shop where we all tasted Pistachio Baklava... a wonderful pastry made with layers of phyllo dough, nuts, and honey.
