CHB #10

Class Notes from May 13, 1955
Colossians 3:17 "And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."

5 sure results of practicing the presence of God in ALL that we do.
1. Excellent help to prayer, producing in us a deep reverence for the majesty of God.
2. Produces a confidence in God- a fearlessness of our enemies, patience in trouble, and a sure hope of remedy.
3. It produces a joy in God for we know he is with us in our natural actions to preserve us, in our public actions to praise or reprove us, in our recreations to restrain us, in our sleep to watch by us, and in our watchings to refresh us.  In all this it makes it easy to keep Paul's rule in Phil. 4:4 and 1 Thess. 5:16
(Phil. 4:4 "Rejoice in the Lord always.  I will say it again: Rejoice!"  1 Thess. 5:16 "Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.")
4. Keeps alive holy desires of the enjoyments of God.
5. It issues forth as a fountain of humility of spirit, causes us to see our great needs, our daily wants, and hourly supplies, and to think of the deep admiration of God's unspeakable mercies.  It helps us to keep our mind and thoughts from wondering loosely.  It helps to make us God-like in all our ways of life.
(2 Peter 1:57 "For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.")

Attitude Toward the Home:

B. Are you willing to suffer and sacrifice if need be for the sake of your home?
C. Are you willing to make a modest beginning or do you expect to have all the luxuries that your parents have after forty years of saving?
D. What preparation have you made towards being a good home-maker?
...
Attitude Toward Occupation:
A. What preparation have you made for your life work?  Is it completed?
B. How much have you already saved?  What debts have you incurred?
C. How is your money invested? How much life insurance do you carry?  Whom do you consult about your investments?
Attitude Toward Religion:
A. What is your attitude toward religion?  Are you a devout Christian? Skeptical? Indifferent?
B. Are you both members of the same church?
C. Do you pray and read the Bible together?
D. Do you look upon religion as having first place in life?  Or is it a thing of minor importance?
Attitude Towards Recreation:
A. What kind of recreation or amusement do you prefer?
B. Do you consider it wholesome and uplifting?
C. What is your idea of a real good party?
D. How much of the Family Budget should be used for amusement and recreation?

Proverbs 15:1-33

1 A gentle answer turns away wrath,
but a harsh word stirs up anger.
2 The tongue of the wise adorns knowledge,
but the mouth of the fool gushes folly.
3 The eyes of the LORD are everywhere,
keeping watch on the wicked and the good.
4 The soothing tongue is a tree of life,
but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit.
 5 A fool spurns a parent’s discipline,
but whoever heeds correction shows prudence.
6 The house of the righteous contains great treasure,
but the income of the wicked brings ruin.
7 The lips of the wise spread knowledge,
but the hearts of fools are not upright.
8 The LORD detests the sacrifice of the wicked,
but the prayer of the upright pleases him.
9 The LORD detests the way of the wicked,
but he loves those who pursue righteousness.
 10 Stern discipline awaits anyone who leaves the path;
the one who hates correction will die.
11 Death and Destruction[a] lie open before the LORD—
how much more do human hearts!
 12 Mockers resent correction,
   so they avoid the wise.
13 A happy heart makes the face cheerful,
   but heartache crushes the spirit.
14 The discerning heart seeks knowledge,
but the mouth of a fool feeds on folly.
15 All the days of the oppressed are wretched,
but the cheerful heart has a continual feast.
16 Better a little with the fear of the LORD
   than great wealth with turmoil.
17 Better a small serving of vegetables with love
than a fattened calf with hatred.
 18 A hot-tempered person stirs up conflict,
but the one who is patient calms a quarrel.
19 The way of the sluggard is blocked with thorns,
but the path of the upright is a highway.
20 A wise son brings joy to his father,
but a foolish man despises his mother.
21 Folly brings joy to one who has no sense,
but whoever has understanding keeps a straight course.
22 Plans fail for lack of counsel,
but with many advisers they succeed.
23 A person finds joy in giving an apt reply—
and how good is a timely word!
24 The path of life leads upward for the prudent
to keep them from going down to the realm of the dead.
25 The LORD tears down the house of the proud,
but he sets the widow’s boundary stones in place.
26 The LORD detests the thoughts of the wicked,
but gracious words are pure in his sight.
27 The greedy bring ruin to their households,
but the one who hates bribes will live.
28 The heart of the righteous weighs its answers,
but the mouth of the wicked gushes evil.
29 The LORD is far from the wicked,
but he hears the prayer of the righteous.
30 Light in a messenger’s eyes brings joy to the heart,
and good news gives health to the bones.
 31 Whoever heeds life-giving correction
will be at home among the wise.
32 Those who disregard discipline despise themselves,
but the one who heeds correction gains understanding.
33 Wisdom’s instruction is to fear the LORD,
   and humility comes before honor.

a different winter glisten

I thought I would miss the glistening snow, but nope.  Haven't missed it at all.
It's been cold here in Texas (then randomly 60 degrees for a day)
but the sun shines almost everyday.  quite the difference from gray Cincinnati
and for that I am thankful.

season of love

(plain red plate+dry erase marker=easy seasonal decoration)
I opened my valentine decoration box and found what I thought was a tablecloth my mom got me last year after the 14th, but realized it was a shower curtain :)  While it's a little bright, we I love the pink festiveness!!  Don't worry Patrick, it will be gone in less than a month.
(remember our old closet bathroom in our last apartment?!  {here}  this one is HUGE compared to it! haha)

oven bbq chicken

Mix the following ingredients together in a small bowl until a paste is formed:
2 tablespoons of olive oil
1 tbsp of chili powder
1 tsp paprika
2 tablespoons of Dijon mustard
pinch of cayenne pepper

Roll about 5 chicken drumsticks in the bowl, covering each with the spice paste.  If you want to make more drumsticks or chicken wings, just double the paste recipe.  Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 2 hours.  (If you remember to refrigerate for 2 hours that is perfect, but one time I forgot to make ahead of time and they still turned out delicious!)

Turn oven to Broil and place a rack about 10 inches from the broiler element.  Line a baking sheet with foil and place the chicken on the sheet.  Broil for 10 minutes, turning occasionally so everything cooks evenly.

While you are waiting... eat a handful of these:
or you could make your own barbecue sauce while you wait instead of doing it the simple way...

Remove the pan and baste the meat all over with barbeque sauce (your favorite kind or make some from the recipe {here}).  Cook for about 10 more minutes until the chicken is cooked through and the sauce has browned lightly.  Eat immediately J

easy to sew dog beds

Depending on the size of dog bed you want, cut out two pieces of the same size fabric.
For the first dog bed, I used  two 1/2 yard pieces of fabric: one side was a cream quilted thick cotton fabric and the other a patterned indoor/outdoor fabric.  I wanted something that was durable and easy to clean off.  When I finished the first, I realized I could have made it a little bigger, so the next one I made was a full yard of fabric and perfect size.  Okay, it's huge, but they aren't little dogs :)

Place the two right sides together and pin the sides:
Sew around all the sides, leaving about a 6 inch opening at one end.  Flip right side out and fill with stuffing.  Once the bed is as full as you would like it, hand stitch the open edge... and you're done!
I think they like them :)

{here} is another version if you already have a pillow and just want to sew a cover...
